Richard Lawrence Jansen

January 13, 1932 — June 25, 2024

Richard Jansen, born on January 13, 1932, to the late Wilhelmina and Alexander Jansen in New Hyde Park, NY, peacefully passed away on June 25, 2024.


Richard's journey was marked by a steadfast commitment to service, family, and community. He attended Emporia State College where he met his first wife, Evelyn, with whom he shared 26 years of marriage and welcomed five beloved sons into the world.


His second marriage was to Roberta C. Jansen, with whom he cherished 20 years of companionship until her passing.


Richard's dedication to his country was exemplary. He served in the National Guard from 1951 to 1953 and went on to a distinguished career in the Army from 1954 to 1980. Rising to the rank of Sergeant Major, he led with integrity and received numerous accolades including the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marksman Badge Rifle M1, Marksman Badge Rifle M16, and the prestigious Legion of Merit.


Not only a decorated soldier, Richard was also deeply involved in his community as a member of various organizations including the American Legion, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Grand Lodge AF & AM, Fraternal Order of Eagles, VFW, and the US Power Squadron.


Richard's passions were as diverse as his achievements. A talented trumpet player, he shared his musical gift widely. His love for photography captured countless memories, while his fascination with trains was a lifelong joy. Richard's spirited singing at karaoke nights brought smiles to many, and his adventurous spirit led him to travel far and wide.


Richard was survived by his sons Terry Jansen (Nancy), Richard Jansen (Wendy), Ronald Jansen, Michael Jansen (Mary Jo), and remembered in memory of his deceased son Robert Jansen. He was grandfather to Bethany, Timothy, Christopher, Ivy, Samantha, Justin, and Taylor, and great-grandfather to Natalie, Max, Palmer, and Stella. Richard was preceded in death by his siblings Wilma and Alexander.


In Richard Jansen, we remember a man of courage, honor, and kindness. His legacy of service and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.


A military memorial service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at  Laurel American Legion Post 60, 2 Main St. Laurel, MD- on Saturday 7/27/24 from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Disabled American Veterans.


Richard Jansen's spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
