FRANKO, Michael Andrew, 84, died suddenly on May 13, 2020 at his home in Baltimore. Michael was born in Philadelphia, grew up in Havre de Grace, and graduated from Towson State Teachers College (now Towson University). He went on to have a 40-year career as a much beloved educator, first as a teacher at Calvert Hall and Baltimore City College. Most of his career however was spent at Western High School -- initially as an English teacher, then guidance counselor, and finally, head of the Guidance Department. At Western he nurtured and championed thousands of young women, was known for his wit and kindness, and was deeply loved by both students and staff. A lifelong lover of learning, Michael also completed three master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins University where he taught part-time. He was predeceased by both his older brother, James, and long-time companion, Shannon Riggs. Michael’s wish was to be cremated privately. A memorial service may be held after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Michael loved all dogs; donations in his memory may be sent to Guide Dogs of America (www.guidedogsofamerica.org/), the Maryland SPCA (/www.mdspca.org) or any charity that cares for animals.
