Kenneth Earl Mcelroy Jr.

April 29, 1939 — June 23, 2024

Ken was born 4/29/39 in Petersburg, VA, to Kenneth Earl McElroy, Sr. and Eileen Baird McElroy. He died 6/23/24 from complications of Alzheimer’s at his home in Baltimore, surrounded by his wife and his four children.

Ken and his wife Dorris celebrated their 63 wedding anniversary on June 17. They met at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA, in junior year homeroom in 1955. After high school, Ken earned a BS in civil engineering from University of Virginia, a masters in engineering from University of North Carolina and a masters in finance from University of Baltimore. At University of Virginia he co-founded the local chapter of Sigma Pi fraternity.

The State of Maryland benefited from Ken’s services for over three decades as an environmental engineer. His work protecting the Chesapeake Bay followed his earlier work on the Great Lakes.

Charles Village was home to the McElroy family for nearly 50 years. His decades of activism ranged from marching to protest the Vietnam war in the 60s and to teaching children to fish last summer at All Gods Children camp at the Bishop Claggett Center. He belonged to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity.

He is survived by his wife, Dorris Wingfield Smith McElroy, his children Patrick (Cathy), Bridget Cowie (Mike), Deirdre (Patrick Mellin) and Brendan, six grandchildren and his sister, Pat Smith of Richmond, VA. He is predeceased by his grandson James.

He loved to fish, with moderate success, and will be remembered by his family for his lengthy prayers before meals, enduring love of ice cream, and the ability to play fictitious scrabble words with plausible meanings. He will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20 at 11:00 at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, 4 E. University Parkway, Baltimore.
