Ellenwood Kindle Cochran, 95, went to be the Lord on July 7, 2023. She was a resident of Heartlands Assisted Living at Severna Park, MD. The daughter of George and Edith Goorley Kindle, Ellen was born on May 29, 1928 in Pitman, New Jersey. She was named after her uncle, Elwood Kindle, who was Pitman’s only resident to die in World War I. The Pitman American Legion Post, an elementary school and a street in Pitman were named in his honor.
After graduating from Pitman High School in 1946, she took a job as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone. She fondly recalled participating in summertime Camp Meetings in Pitman and attending a Billy Graham Crusade in Pittsburgh. She committed her life to Christ in 1970 at a lay-witness weekend in Whitehall, PA.
Ellen was introduced to Charles Cochran by a co-worker in 1949 and married him on September 16, 1950. They were married for 51 years. Charles’ career opportunities moved the family from South Jersey to Kansas City, KS, North Palm Beach, FL, Whitehall, PA and Glen Burnie, MD. During those years they were blessed with three children, Charles (wife Pamela) of Severna Park, MD, Betsy (husband Scott Brown) of Linthicum, MD and Jeffrey (wife Valerie) of Knightdale, NC.
In all of their locales Ellen was known for her humor, encouragement, hospitality, and community spirit. Besides love for her family, relationships were a fundamental part of who she was, as she consistently kept in touch with neighbors and friends from all over the country for decades. Throughout her entire life she exhibited a passion for helping and caring for others, serving in various ministries such as the Food Chain Coordinator at her church. She also volunteered her time and talents in many ways over several years, including as Coordinator of the Heritage Harbour senior care equipment loan exchange and as a volunteer to drive others to medical appointments. Ellen also worked as a Unit Secretary for 20 years at North Arundel Hospital (now Baltimore-Washington Medical Center) in Glen Burnie, MD.
A long-time member of Glen Burnie Evangelical Presbyterian Church and, subsequently, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, Ellen enjoyed sharing her testimony and favorite Scripture, Psalm 46:10. She loved socializing with her friends from both congregations as well as fellow residents of the Heritage Harbour Community in Annapolis, where she lived for over 25 years.
