Christina Murray Younger, 75, died peacefully on March 21, 2024 at her home in Ellicott City, Maryland after a brave 5-year battle with cancer. Beloved mother, wife, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, she spent her last weeks surrounded, loved, and cared for by her family.
Born in Queens, New York on December 26, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Irish immigrants John J. Murray and Christina Noone Murray Lewis, and the stepdaughter of Judge Laverne G. Lewis. Christina was the youngest of three daughters and spent her youth living in NYC. After graduating from Mater Christi High School in Astoria, she moved to Rensselaer, New York and received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the College of Saint Rose. She later moved to Maryland and met her the love of her life, James, while working together at the Maryland Rehab Center. Christina also taught shorthand part time at Howard County Community College, before moving to a fulfilling and lengthy career as a healthcare executive. She was the Vice President of Human Resources at various local hospitals for several years, after transitioning from being a stay-at-home mom. Despite at times having a long commute and an important role, there was always dinner cooked for her family after getting home from work. She worked as a physician’s advisor for a few years before retirement.
Christina loved to cook, her Irish heritage, sitting on her beloved screen porch, her 2 poodles, listening to James Taylor and Carly Simon, taking walks, reading, and springtime. Above all, her greatest joy in life was being a mother until she became the best Mimi to her beloved granddaughters, Elle and Clara. She will be remembered as the most selfless, generous and loving woman, always putting her family first before her own needs. She planned every family gathering, holiday, birthday, and vacation with such excitement and joy. She nurtured and supported every member of her family regardless of her health status.
Her friends and former colleagues have described her as vibrant, funny, resilient, beautiful, feisty, loyal, kind, supportive and strong. Several have recognized how much of a mentor she was for them, both professionally and personally and admired her advances for the healthcare system. And all have acknowledged her fierce, unwavering love for her family which is a comfort during these dark days. We will forever cherish her presence in our lives as a blessing.
Christina is survived by her husband of 47 years, James; her daughters, Kristin (Eric) of Williamsburg, VA and Erin (Kendall) of Arlington, VA; her two grandchildren Elle and Clara; sister Kathleen Corcoran and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and her sister Anne Murray-Wilt (George).
As per Christina’s request, private services will be held. Those wishing to honor her memory with a financial contribution are encouraged to donate to a charity of your choosing. We ask that you please sign the online guest book to express your condolences.
