Betsy Louise "Nami" Panzer

April 17, 1929 — April 22, 2019

Betsy Louise “Nami” Panzer, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on April 22, 2019 at the age of 90. Betsy was born on April 17, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents Mary Elena Smith Wagner and William Arnall Wagner. She was the second youngest of eight children: William, Robert, Eleanor, Martin, Edmund, Doris, and David. On June 21, 1952 Betsy married the love of her life, Paul Louis Panzer. They were married for 50 years until Paul passed away in 2002. In 1994, Betsy and Paul moved from Quakertown, PA to Catonsville, MD with their daughter, Dawn Panzer Tippett. They played an integral role in raising their two granddaughters, whom they adored. In 2018, Betsy moved to Marriottsville, MD with her daughter and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading in the breakfast nook, watching birds fly over the farm next door, and reveled in seeing her family entertain their dear friends. Betsy was an accomplished writer and singer. She wrote stories and poems that were published in local newspapers and composed songs that were performed in church. She enjoyed musical theater and performed in many shows when she was younger. She was active in politics, involved with church outreach, and volunteered at her childrens’ schools. Betsy’s home was always open to everyone, so she quickly became known as “Mama” to all and “Nami” in later years. Betsy is survived by her children, Dawn Panzer Tippett, Paul Panzer, Scott Panzer, and Keith Panzer; her grandchildren, Lydia Tippett Spafford, Alison Tippett, and Morgan Panzer; her grandson-in-law, Alex Spafford; and her brother, David Wagner. A memorial service followed by fellowship will be held at 4:00pm, on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2001 Old Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD 21228. Private internment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully received in her memory; Betsy’s cherished organizations include Gilchrist Center Howard County, Gilchrist Grief Counseling, and Lutheran Mission Society (links below).
