Alan Smith Lupfer

November 30, 1941 — November 9, 2023

Alan Smith Lupfer passed peacefully on November 9, 2023, at the Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant in Ellicott City, Maryland. He was surrounded by loving family before his death.

Alan was born on November 30, 1941, to Frank and Sara Lupfer in Harrisburg, PA. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judith, and three of his four children, Kristin Sullivan (Brian), Lorene LeQuang (Frank), and Eric Lupfer (Catherine). His oldest beloved son, Jeffrey Lupfer (Lisa) is deceased. Alan is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Alan earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree from Louisiana Tech University. He served his country honorably as a Major in the United State Airforce before joining the Department of Defense. He retired in 1994.

Alan enjoyed many hobbies, and his life was full of projects. His skills and interests range from working on cars and small engines to carpentry and furniture refinishing. He was a marathon runner participating in the Baltimore, Marine Corp and New York Marathons to name just a few. He was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, MD where he was an Elder and a Deacon, and where he spent many hours with other retired men making repairs to the church as a founding member of the church REHABS program.

Alan’s greatest joy was sharing his love of the outdoors and nature with his children and grandchildren. He spent countless hours at his mountain land in Pennsylvania where he built his own cabin. The mountains offered a retreat for Alan and an opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends around a campfire.
