Cecilia Squiggins, 92, longtime resident of Catonsville, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2020. She was born on Maple Avenue in Catonsville on December 11, 1927 to Harry and Cecilia Layfield. She lived in Ilchester for many years before moving back to her childhood home on Rosewood Avenue in Catonsville. A well known pianist, organist and piano teacher in the Baltimore and Howard County areas, Cecilia studied piano at the Peabody Institute and privately with Dorothea Ortmann. She was a performing classical pianist, a member of the Musicians Association of Metropolitan Baltimore, and worked with Zim Zemerel’s music organization. She played at various venues, including piano bars at the Timbuktu and Crab Shanty restaurants, and was a regular pianist at Haussner’s restaurant. Cecilia also was a long time church organist serving St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ellicott City and Grace Episcopal Church in Elkridge. In 1978 she received a No Greater Love Spirit award for her work at the St. Francis Center in Baltimore for teaching and her composition “Whitelock Suite”. Cecilia is preceded in death by her husband Jack, son Donald, and grandson Travis and is survived by son Timothy (Betty) of Clover, South Carolina, daughters Heather Caropreso (Aldo) and Glynda Squiggins Byrd (Jim) of Catonsville, grandchildren Heather Moxley (Bill), Katie Kesner, James Byrd and Kayla Squiggins, and great grandchildren Emily and Billy Moxley. She was also the cherished aunt of Richard Shuey (Cathy) and Keith Shuey. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Ivy Manor Chestnut Assisted Living Facility for their compassionate and dedicated care. Internment will be private. Donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
